SOUTHBROOM

In 1933 brothers Gilbert & Frank Eyles formed a partnership and set about planning a park-like residential township on the land acquired by their father, Alfred Eyles, before the turn of the century. A boarding house later became a hotel. Several cottages were soon dotted around the northern part of the town.

Today Southboom is a leafy, up-market village with luxury accommodation, a bowling green, tennis courts, a top-class 18-hole golf course, two beach front restaurants, a supermarket, bottle store, craft shop & art gallery.

The excellent swimming & surfing beach, well known among local surfers as well as the international surfing contingent, has both life guards & shark nets and provides good, safe surfing for beginners and experienced surfers alike.

SOUTHBROOM GOLF CLUB

A 9-hole golf course was laid out and built in 1939. It was extended into an 18-hole layout in 1948 following the increase in the popularity of the game after the end of the Second World War. Four of the original nine holes were incorporated into the new 18-hole layout. In 1950 the Southbroom Golf Club was formed. The clubhouse, which had undergone many additions and alterations over the years, was opened on 6 November 1954.

The course has undergone major changes and its charm as a picturesque, but nevertheless challenging course, never fails to impress. When the wind blows at Southbroom, this spectacular sea front course with its famous par-3 4th hole tests even the best. Par for the course, which measures 5512m for men & 4926m for ladies, is 72. The club has a well stocked pro-shop, a resident teaching professional, Derek James, and offers attractive rates for groups.

Visitors are always welcome and with its tough & tight layout through lush coastal bush and spectacular sea & surf views from the 4th & 5th tees, the course has been described as "one of the finest holiday golf courses to be found anywhere in the country".
