MARINA BEACH

In 1934 the owners of the farm "Canaan", in honour of the announcement that the Duke of Kent was to marry the Princess Marina in November of that year, decided to give a royal flavour to the area and call the township they were going to develop Marina Beach.

A jewel in the South Coast's crown, Marina Beach with its long, clean beach, tidal pool & beachfront restaurant has been called the "Honolulu of the South Coast".

TRAFALGAR

Missionary relatives of the great sea lord, Viscount Horatio Nelson, who came to this country in the late 19th century, named the property they bought Trafalgar after the decisive naval battle in 1805 where the French & Spanish fleets were defeated by the English under their famous forebear. In the 1940's a Johannesburg mining merchant acquired the farm and at the end of the Second World War, with the holiday property market boom, he set about establishing a new township. Because of the historical connections with Horatio Nelson, the names of many illustrious and famous English seamen were selected as street names.

Today this beautiful unspoilt village with its wide grassy verges, subtropical vegetation and wonderful 2 km long beach, may indeed have warlike namesake origins but, in reality, is a quiet piece of paradise.

Trafalgar has a caravan park, tea room and art & crafts shop. The beach has been declared a Marine Reserve, incorporating two kilometres of shoreline and reaching 500m out to sea. It contains rich and valuable marine fossil beds estimated to be around 90 million years old. In calm, clear conditions the rocky reef formation, containing remains of shellfish, fish species, plant material & petrified wood, is a wonderful snorkeling experience.
